1278187282 30 How can I get mold off of cloth cushions for outdoor furniture?

I've kept my cushions in a plastic box and some rain must have seeped in causing my cushions to get mold on them. I don't want to use bleach because obviously that would cause the colour to fade.

My outdoor cushions came with cleaning instructions, so you might want to check with the manufacturer to see if you can get more information from them.

For my cushions, I used a solution of water, mild laundry detergent (I used all Free and Clear) and a small amount of bleach (like 1/4 cup in a 5 gallon bucket). My cushions are white/ivory, so color fading was not an issue for me.

I've never heard of the pool solution suggested above, it sounds reasonable, but I would be a little concerned about how the pool chemicals would impact the fabric as well.

If you own a pool, throw them in the pool and let them sit in there for a while. The chlorine will kill the mold and clean the cushions. seriously…. it's common practice.

1278158691 93 Rain, Rain Go Away

Creators Syndicate – As I sit here, writing away in my kitchen, I can hear the pitter-patter of raindrops outside on our back porch. If it keeps up another 10 minutes, I'm going to climb the stairs to the third floor, open a window and jump.

About 10 years ago, I built a deck off our kitchen so that we'd have a place to sit outside in the summer. But because I built it too small, too rickety and with unstable handrails, we never used it. over the past year, I completely tore apart the deck and rebuilt it, but we found that bigger wasn't necessarily better. Without some protection from the elements, the back deck was just a big frying pan in the summer. We needed something to cover it.

Worse yet, the patio furniture we'd bought (at a yard sale) was uniquely constructed. The topside of the cushions was fabric and the bottom side was Naugahyde — stuff that's supposed to look like leather, but everyone knows is plastic. What that meant is that when it rained, the cushions soaked up gallons of water, taking forever and a day to dry out. A full week after a big storm, I'd sit on one of the cushions, hear the big squish sound, and then have to go change my soaking pants.

I know this could be alleviated if we remembered to take the cushions inside every time it rained. Anyone who knows us knows that we're not the type of people who remember to do simple things like that. Sometimes, we'll be inside during a big rainstorm and suddenly wonder whether anyone remembered to let the dog in.

I spent a great deal of time drawing up plans for a roof over the deck, something that would keep us dry in the rain and provide shade in the heat. My wife, though, reminded me that the deck I'd built had been so rickety that it swayed when anyone walked across it. She said she was truly and deeply sorry, but she didn't trust my carpentry enough to walk underneath anything I'd built.

My ego was a little hurt, but I agreed to order a custom-built fixed awning. it cost about the same as getting a real roof. I wouldn't be able to use my carpentry skills, but on the plus side, I wouldn't have to worry every time it rained that the entire thing would crush us into pancakes as we sat eating our morning pancakes.

The awning took about eight weeks and three sizable installment payments. The checks were really difficult to write with tears running down my face. But when it was installed about a month ago, I had to admit that it looked great.

My wife immediately went out to rearrange deck furniture and to scrounge around for knickknacks to decorate our new covered deck. I paged through the instruction manual that the installers had left behind. There couldn't be that much to it I thought: Grab a beer and a good magazine, and try not to fall asleep too quickly. Then I noticed a disclaimer: Our new awning was not — repeat not —waterproof. I stared at that for a few moments, letting that soak in.

I started to point this out to my wife, but she was too busy pointing out the evening sky, where huge black clouds were forming on the horizon. The TV news started that beeping the way they do when there's a "severe" weather alert.

Ten minutes later, I was standing in our kitchen doorway watching rain pour onto our porch from every conceivable direction. it was dripping from all the little seams, spraying in from the gaps on the side. And most remarkably, the rain was pouring in off the flat roof of our pantry, like a scale model Niagara Falls.

Since then, every three or four days, we've gotten another soaker, each worse than the last, rain coming down so hard that I expect to see Gene Kelly dancing across my porch. I've considered painting "S.S. Minnow" on the front corner of our foundation. Each time I stand at the kitchen doorway, I watch our poorly designed porch furniture soak up even more water, our knickknacks get soggier, and the miniature Niagara Falls put on another private mocking show.

If you'll excuse me for a moment, I have to go turn off the TV. The beeping of the weather alert is really getting on my last nerve, and I have to get upstairs to the third floor before I change my mind.

Community » Hundreds Will Walk in Parish Relay for Life June 11 and 12

PARISH — More than 280 people have signed up to take part in the Parish Relay for Life June 11 and 12 at the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Middle School. the event begins at 6 p.m. Friday and continues until Saturday morning at the middle school track on county Route 22.

This is the community’s third annual Relay for Life event that raises funds to fight against cancer. Chairwoman Kim Perkins said people are welcome to stop by any time during the event, listen to live music, and take part in any of the activities. Six area bands are scheduled to perform. Team Depot will bring their Children’s Workshop with an assortment of projects for children, caricature artist Jim Coon will draw portraits, and balloon artist Henry Gloude will create balloon animals and hats for children. Frontier Communications will hold a Kids Zone Carnival, and people can have their fortunes told and palms read by Debra Corsette and Georgia Cunningham.

The stylists of Smart Style Hair Salon from the Central Square Wal-Mart Super Center will do haircuts for Locks of Love and $5 wet cuts. All funds raised are being donated to the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Refreshments will be sold throughout the event.

Survivors and individuals undergoing treatment for cancer are invited to participate in the inspirational “Survivors’ Lap” during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday. Survivors are invited to a free dinner in the middle school cafeteria after the survivors lap.

“Anyone in remission from cancer or still fighting cancer is considered a survivor,” said Perkins. “What better way to inspire someone still fighting cancer than to have them attend a Relay survivor lap and be cheered on by so many people? this inspires them to fight with everything they have, and it also shows them that they are our hope and our inspiration to relay.”

The track will be lit up with luminary candles in honor of those lost to cancer and cancer survivors at 9:30 p.m. Friday night. Those who wish to sponsor a luminary bag may purchase them for $5 each at the event. People should bring a canned good to weigh the bag down. Canned goods will be donated to area food pantries. There will also be a Memory Garden where people can reflect and honor their loved ones.

All guys are invited to bring their best dresses, highest heels and largest purse to compete for the title of “Miss Relay” in a talent show and beauty pageant at midnight.

At least 21 teams have signed up the event. People can still join a team by registering at the Parish Relay Web site at relayforlife.org/parishNY.

Relay for Life will be held rain or shine and participants should come prepared for the weather. Relay is an alcohol-free and tobacco-free event.

Suggested items to bring include tent, proper clothing for the weather, pillows and sleeping bags, flashlights, money for fundraiser items and refreshments, walking or running shoes, folding chairs, and stick lighters to help light luminary bags. For more information go to the Relay Website or call Perkins at 625-4122.

1278100898 20 Why do so many people buy pickup trucks for commuting?

It's a terrible vehicle to use as a daily driver. It's easy to spin the rear drive wheels during any sign of rain much less ice or snow. especially when going up a hill or freeway onramp. It's RWD with a light end so it oversteers and the rear end spins far too easily, even with an underpowered 4 cylinder coupled to an automatic. Also the ride is very brutal. you feel EVERY bump, every road imperfection. there is no cushioning at all. It's like sitting in one of those electric vibrating lazy boy chairs while cruising down the highway. A pot hole makes the steel frame jar with lightning force.

The truck feels so unstable. Doesn't track well, doesn't corner well. Panic manuvers are not possible. I've driven all sorts of pickup trucks. they are all like this but compact pickups are the worst offenders. i.e. Tacoma, Ranger, S10, Colorado, etc. they are terrible in bad weather.

What gives? Why do people keep buying them for daily driving?

70% for utility and job use, 30% because guys think it's cool.

No doubt some people buy them for ego. That's true with many vehicles. I own a sports car, and it's definitely an ego thing.

However, I think a lot of people buy them for utility. Pickups today are pretty nice, and I mostly disagree with you about the overall handling in the newer models. Why buy another vehicle just for commuting? Plus, it's pretty common where I live for families to keep a car or van for a primary vehicle and a pickup for the other vehicle. That means somebody's commuting in it!

It is obvious from your question that you do not like trucks. many people do not share your views. I have a truck and it handles well for me. I do not "spin the rear drive wheels during any sign of rain much less ice or snow". I know how to drive!

A truck has much more utility than a car or van. I can carry anything from lumber to auto parts to furniture. if I am driving one of my cars, and I want to make a purchase, I have to be concerned about it fitting in the car, and not messing up the interior! if I am driving my truck, I can put anything in the bed (tie it down with ratchet straps if needed) and go!

A truck will not handle like a sports car, they are two different types of vehicles. you have to adapt your driving style to the vehicle you are in. I expect my truck to handle differently than my Town car, and both handle differently than a sports car.

Many people find the utility of a tuck is well worth adapting to!

maybe the job they are with requires them to have alot of tools and other work-related material. We have a pickup truck that is used to haul things-does come in handy.

Because it beats the cost of renting one when you need one if you need one regularly.

My old Silverado actually rode very well. While I love the Wrangler I'm driving now, I sort of miss the Silverado.

I have an F350 for work, but it's a pain to go to the office to get it if I need to do a weekend project on the house. At the time I had the Silverado, it was an incredible tool; I used it regularly for work, why should I have a second vehicle?

I will probably never get an aircraft engine into the back of the Wrangler. Moving my welder around is a challenge with the Jeep compared to the truck, and we're not even going to discuss trying to move my toolbox.

When we needed fresh nitrogen bottles, I couln't have used the Jeep for that. when I had to go pick up steel for a custom fabrication project, I couldn't have used the Jeep for that.

I think you'd be surprised at how regularly someone that buys a pickup winds up using for what it was meant to do; haul stuff.

As for traction, I added a toolbox to the bed and 250 pound steel plate. it wasn't a problem.

I used to have a game of trying to get someone who wouldn't notice behind me and taking railroad tracks at speeds of 45 or more.

For someone that needs, and regularly uses it, a pickup is a better investment than having to regularly rent, or annoy a pickup owner when you need to borrow it. Who's to say I shouldn't be able to drive it home or to work or the burger place because it's what I have and in the drive?

JT

I move ALL the time. I don't think I've lived anywhere for more than 6 months since joining the military 5 years ago. A pickup comes in handy.

Why do so many people buy pickup trucks for commuting?

1277989444 66 An LMAO joke! Guaranteed roar!?

A painting contractor was speaking with a woman about her decorating job. In the first room she said she would like a pale blue. the contractor wrote this down and went to the window, opened it, and yelled out
"green side up!"

In the second room she told the painter she would like it painted in a soft yellow. he wrote this on his pad, walked to the window, opened it, and yelled
"green side up!"
The lady was somewhat curious but she said nothing.

In the third room she said she would like it painted a warm rose color. the painter wrote this down, walked to the window, opened it and yelled
"green side up!"
The lady then asked him, "Why do you keep yelling 'green side up'?"
"I'm sorry," came the reply. "but I have a crew of blondes laying a lawn across the street.
