so i have a chaise lounge that isn't good for whats its supposed to be used for and i was going to throw it away but then thought if i laid it flat (the head part) and put on a long cushion, it could make a great bench! (or because its long, perhaps couch would be a better word).
so what I'm asking for is some suggestions for the back of the "couch"…

Question by Matt: Bench Press question please help guys?
I’m not furtunate enough to own a bench press machine or even a proper bench or straight bar so i’m using a wooden bench from our outside table and just lye on that with a few cushions underneath so as to not be uncomfy or hurt my back, it looks better than it sounds! Lol
I’m quite a noob when it comes to the ‘bench press’ so i’m using the only weights that are available to me which are two 12kg dumbbells!.. I’ve been doing 20 reps and 3 sets. Is this ok to start out with or am i going to have to some how come up with the money to buy more equipment which i stress i CANNOT do right now!! Please give me advice as i’m really wanting to build my chest up but the two 12 kg dumbbells are all i possess apart from a York Chest Expander which i’ve been told does nothing at all to get a bigger chest!

you are better off with push ups. mix it up with your feet elevated too. you will def need to get a bench within a few months to make real gains.

To be honest, the best way to train your chest is to do push-ups. They are the best thing for you. Try doing 200 a day and you’ll notice changes.

Push ups help, but they are not the same as the bench press. You can maybe save money to buy a bar and weights or find something around the house that is heavy enough for you to train with.

Question by christies_e_phone: How do I upholster the inside curves on a RV dinnette bench?
i am trying to upholster dinnette benches on and old RV. I am not talking about the cushions, but the benches themselves. I have a felt backed vinyl or pleather material. I will cover the backs with one piece and the front sides with another I can not figure out how to neatly cover the inside corners. (Imagine a curvy L shaped board) I am sure it just takes the right tucking or cutting technique, but I can’t figure out what that is! I was hoping to do the sides with a single piece of fabric pulled tightly over and stapled, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Any help would be great!!!

My first thought comes from doing some cushioning myself; and the fact that practice on a scrap might help initially. Obviously an inside curve is an IFFY thing for a DIY.
I’d lay out the piece; with the foam cushioning; and faux leather; then slice/cut the excess to PULL tight; just to the edge of the ply; on the UNDER side. Beginning at the center most point of the radius; staple that strip; then moving from side to side with the cut strips; stretch away from the center to get that radius as smooth as possible. You might have to overlap some of the strips to achieve the smooth look on what will be the FACE/ edge of the cushion. I’d try that on a practice piece before I’d PLEAT at the radius. Obviously a “Hospital Corner” could work, but it won’t look as professional

Question by still waiting: How much wood do I need for this storage bench?
The dimensions of the bench are as follows:
4′ long, 2′ high, and 18″ across. I want to use 3/4” plywood, with 2′x4′s to frame the bottom. So going by this, I’m assuming I need a 2′x4′x12′ for the bottom frame, although I’ll only use 11′. How much plywood do I need? I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly how much I’ll need to buy without having too much left over. I’m also wanting to add a scalloped edge to the back of the top piece, so that I can place a cushion on top. How do I go about attaching it? Also, I know I’ll need two piano hinges and a latch, finishing screws and wood glue. Am I leaving out anything? A little help here, fellas.

Always buy more wood than you think you’ll need because it usually will save you at least one trip to the store to buy more due to miscalculation, bad measuring, or clumsy cutting. I’ve been guilty of all three, sometimes on the same piece of wood and I’ve been a cabinetmaker for over 20 years.
I’m not sure I understand your description of your design. If the bench is to be a plywood box with a hinged top, then you’ll need more than one sheet of 4 x 8 plywood, and if the bottom is a simple 2 x 4 frame, then you just need a piece of plywood 18″ x 48″ for the top. If it’s a plywood box, you don’t need any 2 x 4′s at all as the plywood is plenty strong enough without it.
Are you going to paint it? If so, consider using MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) it has a smooth surface with no grain and no plys on the edges. Unless it’s going outdoors, then use marine plywood and Titebond II or III wood glue as it is for exterior applications.
I’m not sure you need a piano hinge unless you want to see it, otherwise I’d use a couple of 2″ butt hinges as they’re easier, cheaper, and semi adjustable. Piano hinges don’t lend themselves to anything that isn’t perfectly square and aligned, where regular small hinges can be shimmed or mortised to get doors to close right.
Some nails to hold it while the yellow wood glue dries and a latch and you’re done. If it’s a toy box for little ones, get a lid support or two so it won’t slam on tiny fingers.
