Question by : Where can I find inexpensive nice looking patio furniture? ?
I’m looking for a nice outdoor patio set for my balcony, preferably two deep seating chairs with thick cushions and a love seat. I’m wanting it to be under or around 300 though, anyone know of a place that sells quality at a good price? Everything I’ve found has been 1,000+!

You can also try patiofurnitureusa.com or outdoorpatioinc.com. They have outdoor furniture under 500. Based on your description of the kind of patio furniture you want, you might need to have a patio cover installed to protect your patio furniture from the weather.

We just bought a lake house that is full of 50′s or 60′s furniture. Everyone seems to be going crazy over it, so we figure maybe we need to sell it on ebay or another website. However we are not sure how much to post it for. The table and chairs are in good condition but the table legs are showing a little age. It comes with 6 chairs and an oval table. Table top and chairs in perfect condition.
There is also a three seat glider and a chase lounger. Both of which are in perfect condition. They have cushions that are perfect not faded at all and the metal is perfect. We are not really into the retro look or we would keep them for ourselves. We thought that we could sell them and put that money towards the remodeling of the place. If you have any idea what these items might be worth, that would be great!

Without actually seeing photo’s it can be hard to know. They could be something run-of-the-mill, or something truly worthy. Your best bet is to do some research. You don’t want to find out later that you undersold yourself. Although, on eBay, if its something hot the price will climb.
Any easy way to find out if it is something special, is to take photo’s and show them to an auctioneer who specializes in mid-century modern for an opinion.

Question by : Staining bare patches on outdoor wood (rattan) furniture?
I have an old rattan indoor/outdoor porch furniture set. The finish has worn off in many places, arms, back, but the rest is in fair condition and has a heavy coat of varnish. I would like to stain it the same color so that the bare spots pick up the color and then re-varnish all the pieces. They have cushions, so a lot of the wood (rattan) does not show. Can I do this without totally stripping the whole set? For instance using a wiping stain, and then re-varnishing the whole set? I have already sanded all the pieces but it is impossible for me to get through the vanish layers. They are not out in the weather but occasionally gets a shower through the screens and suffer the cold, heat and dampness of living semi-outdoors in Michigan..

It depends how picky you are. You can stain and darken those areas, but it will never be an exact match. Try an area and see if you can live with the “blotchiness”.

All I can think of is go look up old Homer Formby or Earl Proulx columns. They dealt with these questions all the time,and they know what they talk about. The first guy talked on PBS, and the second guy in Yankee Magazine. Have you called Lowe’s?

Question by rhonda208: keeping dew off outdoor furniture?
I have a new outdoor table and chairs with thick moisture repellent cushions. The problem is that every morning they are wet with dew and I want to keep them dry in the hopes they will look nice longer. I would also like to sit on them in the am but can’t. I tried throwing a bedsheet over the entire thing but the sheet was soaked along with the furniture. Would a plastic tarp do the trick or is there something else, other than bringing them indoors every night. I’d like to keep the cushions on the chairs if possible. I’m looking for a simple solution for a lazy person.

plastic tarp would work

Plastic tarp will help especially if it doesn’t touch the cushions. You want the saturated air from coming in contact with the cushions which are colder than air temp thus dew on the cushions. Or get a nice looking outdoor box that you can put the cushions in when you come indoors.

I went to my local Family Dollar store, and purchased two plastic tarps. They were $ 3 a piece, when I bought them. They repel the moisture and rain that would otherwise, lay on your cushions. It’s not much of an investment, and worth it! Good luck!

Question by suzyqgreen: How do I stop birds from eating the stuffing out of my new patio furniture?
I recently bought patio furniture with outdoor safe cushions. But the cushions are already being pecked to pieces by the birds in my backyard! They have made several holes in the new cushions and it’s clear that it’s the stuffing they are after. Does anyone know how I can keep this from happening?

They aren’t eating it, they are using it to build their nests. The only thing you can do is put them away until the nesting season is over. Once they have found that good stuff for their nests, they won’t leave it alone!
